Steven Roy Mayo was born April 4, 1945 in Anthony, Kansas, son of L.C. "Shorty" and Grace Marie (Snell) Mayo.  He grew up on a farm near Bluff City, Kansas, graduating from Bluff City High School.

From a young age, Steve developed a great love for the land and animals.  For a short time, he tried a career in the Aircraft industry, but quickly realized his only passion was farming and ranching. He loved animals, especially horses, cows, and his donkey, Molly.  Being outdoors farming, ranching, hunting, or fishing is most often where Steve could be found.

Steve also loved people and kids. His ornery and kind heart has left a lasting impression on many.  Living in Bluff City, he had many close relationships with his neighbors and their families.  He always put thought into pranking the youngsters, and everyone knew to be on the lookout for what he would be up to next.

Steve had the biggest heart!  His gentle, calm, caring demeaner, made it impossible to not like him.  All knew that if they ever needed help with anything, Steve would be the first one there to lend a hand.  He watched out for all the residents in Bluff City and made many of them feel safe.  His memorable smile and waves will be missed by many.

Being the people person he was, he also loved to bullshit!  If you saw Steve, you didn't pass on by without a good conversation.  Many wouldn't have known he enjoyed dancing and was light on his feet, attending many dances at Sokol Hall throughout the years.  His love of sweets was possibly his biggest downfall – donuts, Dr. Pepper, and chocolate covered cherries, being some of his favorites.

On January 25, 2022, Steve passed away at Anthony Community Care Center at the age of 76 years.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Steve will be deeply missed by his brother, Rod Mayo and wife, Debbie; nephew, Lynn Mayo and wife, Kristin, and their girls, Kilian and daughter, Saylor, and Kinzee and husband Kody; nieces, Mandy Gray and Chasity Mayo; close friends, Jason and Stephanie Goertz and their daughters, Camie and Kaylee; other relatives; and a host of many family.

A come and go memorial service will be held on April 9, 2022 at the Bluff City School from 2:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Sandwiches, salads, and desserts will be served.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Steve may be made to the Steve Mayo Memorial Fund, in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003.
