Richard W. "Rick" Garlow was born February 28, 1952 in Hardtner, Kansas, son of Marvin and Barbara Jane (Cooper) Garlow. He grew up in Anthony, where he attended Berlin School, east of Anthony, until the school closed. In 1965, tragedy struck the family when Marvin suddenly passed away, leaving Barbara with three boys to raise. Throughout his youth Rick kept his mother on her toes with his mischievous and dangerous ways of life including riding motorcycles. He graduated from Anthony High School in 1970, which was also the last class before the school closed.
On June 25, 1976, Rick and Lori Mize eloped at the courthouse in Anthony. Rick and Lori spent every second together that they could. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Lynda and Jodi, who each stole their daddy's heart.
Rick worked as a mechanic at Spirit Aero Systems (formerly Boeing) in Wichita, Kansas for 27 years before retiring in May 2014. He and Lori were members of the Anthony Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon. He enjoyed archery, motorcycles and cars.
In June of 2016, Rick and Lori celebrated their 40th Anniversary. They were still deeply in love, grateful and thankful for one another and their family.
On December 11, 2016, Rick passed away at the Anthony Medical Center at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 11 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Steve "Buck" Payne.
Rick will be forever missed by his wife of 40 years, Lori; his daughters, Lynda Newberry and husband, Dustin, and Jodi Garlow; brothers, Steve Garlow and wife, Nancy, and Gary Garlow and wife, Kathy; caregiver, Julie Abel; mother-in-law, Mary Mize; father-in-law, Max Mize; sister-in-law, Angie Payne; 6 grandchildren: Austin, Kierstin, Kaitlin, Kylin, Kambrin and RJ Newberry; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
