Monty Lyn Hess was born October 16, 1965 in Kiowa, Kansas, the youngest of four children born to Roy Theodore and Georgia Maxine (Rash) Hess.  He grew up in Waldron, Kansas working on the family farm throughout his childhood.  He graduated from Chaparral High School with the Class of 1984.

Following graduation, Monty became a full-time farm hand working for his family and local farmers until 2001 when he began his career with Harper County Road and Bridge as a road grader.  He continued helping farmers in his down time and during Harvest.

In 1990, Monty's life changed forever when he became a father to his son, Kelly.  Monty was a dedicated father who never missed a single sporting event.  He enjoyed teaching Kelly things, especially mechanics.  He was a great mechanic and had a fascination with Plum wrenches, acquiring quite the collection over the years.

Monty was a kind, caring, help anyone kind of guy.  He was always willing to help anyone in need, whether it be by towing a car or mowing a lawn.  He grew a huge garden every year that he enjoyed sharing with family and friends.  With his dedication to helping others, he served on the Anthony Community Care Center Board and the County Insurance Board.  He also loved being a jokester and bringing a smile to others.

Raised in a devout Christian family, Monty was a lifelong member of the Rosedale Church of Christ.  The Rosedale Church and cemetery, where many of his family are laid to rest, were very important to him.

In 2009, Monty found a new love when he became a grandpa.  The birth of his twin granddaughters gave him a pride he hadn't felt since he became a father.  The girls quickly had him wrapped around their little fingers and he was always there for them.  In 2024, Monty became the first great-grandparent in his generation of the family when his great-granddaughter, Wrenlee, was born.

Monty was always a huge fan of sports.  Rock Chalk Jayhawk to the end!!  He attended and supported sports at Chaparral, Burlington, and Attica and was a Kansas City Chiefs fan.  He would travel near and far to support his son and nephews in their activities.  His family was always the most important to him and he always looked forward to family reunions, day trips, and vacations.  He also always looked forward to his annual trip with Kelsey Brown to go visit Jeff Hamilton.

On July 31, 2025, Monty passed away at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, after a brief illness, at the age of 59.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marty; and niece, Brittany Hess.

Monty will be deeply missed by his son, Kelly Hess; granddaughters, Savannah and Shyanne; great-granddaughter, Wrenlee; brother, Max Hess; sister, Carla Hess; nephews: Michael, Colton, and Clayton Hess; aunts and uncles: Faye Thompson, Allen and Tressie Hess, Edgar and Sherry Hess, and Minnie Crain; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Friends may view and register from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at Prairie Rose in Anthony.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony with David Hodson officiating.  A private inurnment will take place at a later date in the Rosedale Cemetery, southwest of Manchester, Oklahoma.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Monty may be made to the Monty Hess Memorial Fund or to the Rosedale Cemetery and can be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003.
