Melvin Dean Phillips was born February 24, 1932 in Byron, Oklahoma, son of Eb and Elsie (White) Phillips.  His family moved to Attica, Kansas where he attended his early years of school.  In 1945, the family moved to Anthony where he completed his education, graduating from Anthony High School in 1951.

On February 5, 1953, Melvin was inducted into the United States Army.  He served in active duty until his honorable discharge/transfer to the Army Reserves, where he continued serving for another 8 years.  During his active duty he served as a transportation specialist assigned to an engineer unit in the 2 ^nd Infantry Division.  He received the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.  After the Korean Conflict was over he received the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Korea Medal for his participation post war.  He also received many other awards during the time he proudly served his country.

On January 12, 1958, Melvin married Koa D. Davis.  This union was blessed with two daughters, Delane and Gala.  The couple later divorced.

Melvin's lifelong career was with the City of Anthony, where he spent 41 years working at the power plant before retiring.  In earlier years he worked at the Fox Grocery Store.  And at one time he sold trailers, with longtime friend, Phil Truby.  They had a lot in Anthony and also would sell the trailers at the State Fair.

The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to soldiers who distinguish themselves from their fellow soldiers through their exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity.  These were qualities and traits that Melvin stayed true to throughout his entire life.  He took pride in everything he did and was always willing to go above and beyond for anyone.  He had a contagious laugh and was quite a character.

On November 5, 2022, Melvin passed away at Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie, Kansas at the age of 90.  He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Delane Cousins; brother, Howard Phillips; and sister, Betty Morawitz.

Melvin will be deeply missed by his daughter, Gala Schaffer; granddaughter, Misty Cullop and great-grandson, Bradan Salsberry; granddaughter, Katelin Cooper and husband, Kirby, and great-granddaughters, Olivia and Riley; his Prairie Sunset Home family; and many friends.

Memorial service will be held November 19, 2022 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony, Kansas at 11:00 a.m.  Military honors will be performed by US Army Honor Guard.
