Mary Lorraine (Kane) Mize was born April 2, 1934 to Lewis Kane and Vera Kane.   Mary grew up on a farm west of Bluff City and told many stories over the years of her life on the farm.  Mary graduated from Bluff City High School with the Class of 1952.  After graduation she attended Wesley Nursing School and graduated with the Class of 1955.   She made many friends during Nursing School and still kept in close touch with them.  She retired from nursing in 1983.

Mary married David Payne and to this union they were blessed with two children, Stephen Lee and Lori Lynn.    Being a mom was very special to Mary, but becoming a Grandmother was the highlight of her life.  When Lynda and Jodi were growing up, they were at her house every weekend just hanging out.  When Mary moved to Kingman, the girls still found a way to make it to Kingman as much as possible.  Having granddaughters was great, but she was very excited when Max and Alec were born.  Even though they lived in Kansas City, she loved following their sports on-line and visiting them any chance she got.   Mary eventually moved to Attica to be closer to her great-grandchildren and loved to have them over any chance she could.

Mary loved sports!   She was a huge Kansas State fan and loved that she had grandchildren attend and graduate from there.   She always had a game on at her house.  She drove everyone crazy with her phone notifications from ESPN updating her on all the games.   She also attended many of her grandchildren's activities and always loved bragging about their accomplishments.

Mary loved to read, play bridge, and travel.  She has traveled all over the world and loved seeing new places.  Her Bridge club friends were very important to her and she cherished her time with them.  She was on the Attica Library Board and seems to have read almost all the books in there.  She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Kingman.

When Mary was diagnosed with cancer in November and decided not to have treatment, she told everyone that she lived a good long life and was ready to go see her family, especially her children Steve and Lori.  Losing both her children was the hardest times of her life, but she exemplified true strength by being there for the rest of her family.

Mary passed away on January 30, 2023 after a short battle with cancer in Attica, KS.

Mary was preceded in death by her son Steve (Buck) Payne, her daughter Lori Garlow, son-in-law Rick Garlow, her parents, her siblings, Norma Patterson, Merle (Doc) Kane, & Dee Wimmer.

She will be forever missed by her grandchildren: Lynda Newberry and husband Dustin, Jodi Garlow, Maxwell Payne, Alec Payne & her daughter-in-law Angie Payne and husband Ed Cronin.  She will also be missed by her Great Grandchildren: Austin Newberry, Kierstin Vogt and husband Eric, Kaitlin Newberry and fiancé Theron Eslinger, Kylin Newberry, Kambrin Newberry and Randell (RJ) Newberry, and great-great granddaughter Vogt on the way; Kane siblings, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2023 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.  Burial will follow in the Attica Cemetery.

Friends may register from 9:00 a.m. to service on Monday at Prairie Rose in Anthony.
