Marcella Glee Hanna Patterson was born at the Galloway hospital in Anthony, KS on July 5, 1931. She was the only child of Ormonde and Leota (Varnum) Hanna. Marcella was an excellent student and finished her time at Corwin elementary school and Attica High school a year early with the class of '47. Through her childhood Marcella learned to play the piano and spent many hours practicing. This talent served her well over the years as she taught piano lessons, accompanied many solos, groups and ensembles. For many years she was the church pianist or organist at the Corwin or Hopewell Presbyterian churches where she attended. Music was always a large part of Marcella's life.

Marcella attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina and later NWOSU at Alva OK. She then taught at Corwin Elementary School.

On August 14, 1949, Marcella was united in marriage with Phillip Patterson at Corwin, Kansas. To this union six children were born: Randy, Christie, Cathy, Ronnie, Rocky and Cari Jo. For a few years a cousin, Kedzie Patterson Ratcliffe, lived with Phillip and Marcella, and remained a special part of the family to this day.

Phillip was a farmer and rancher and Marcella was probably best known for feeding everyone that worked on the farm and anyone that might be passing through. Marcella showed her love through food and the more people she could gather at her kitchen table, the happier she was. Marcella was always on the go and always willing to take anyone to appointments and to help her friends and neighbors in any way she could.

Marcella was involved in many kid related activities as the children grew up. Most notably, she was the Community Leader of the Goldenrule 4-H club for over 30 years helping many, many kids with projects, talks and concession stands through that time. One of her greatest joys was keeping books for the Kansas High School Rodeo Association for thirty years. Some of Marcella's fondest memories were made at Kansas high school rodeos. She enjoyed all levels of rodeo, for many, many years. Watching Rocky win one of his World Titles in Steer Roping was a highlight of her life.

Marcella was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Eta Alpha Sorority and the Hopewell Presbyterian church.

Phillip and Marcella enjoyed many camping trips with Dutch and Helen Cantrell across the United States. Playing cards and dominoes with the Holcomb's or Pete and Hazel Cantrell was also a regular fun family activity! They also kept a close friendship with Jack and Nellie Robinson.

Through the years, Ronnie helped Phillip on the farm. Phillip eventually retired. On January 3, 2009 Phillip and Marcella moved to Anthony. Phillip passed away on April 11, 2009 and Marcella enjoyed going out to eat and playing cards with her friends.

Marcella passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the Harper Hospital at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phillip; granddaughters Morgan Piehl Elliott and Jana Lynne Mackey; and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Peggy Catlin and Rudy Gerberding.

She will be deeply missed by her children: Randy Patterson of Anthony, Christie Brungardt and husband, Curt, of Hays, Cathy Spicer of Anthony, Ronnie Patterson of Anthony, Rocky Patterson and wife, Shelly, of Pratt, and Cari Jo Base and husband, Jeff, of Kingman; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; also a sister-in-law, Phyllis Gerberding of Caldwell; a cousin Sylvia Russell, Houston TX and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home-Anthony, with Pastor Kent Olds officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Prairie Rose in Anthony.

Memorials in memory of Marcella may be made to Harper Hospital or Jana's Campaign and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
