Claudine grew up in Mulvane and graduated from Mulvane High School in 1940. During school, she participated in several activities including music, debate and basketball. She also was active in Epworth League at the Methodist Church and played the piano for Sunday evening services.

After high school, Claudine attended the University of Kansas on a Watkins Scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business in 1944. While attending KU, she participated in Wesley Foundation, Intramurals, Phi Chi Theta (business society), and YWCA. She rarely missed football and basketball games and enjoyed concerts and plays when possible. She remained a KU sports fan her entire life. Moreover, for years, she worked with the KU Honors program, which recognizes top high school students. Her legacy continues with her daughter and grandson who both graduated from KU along with her granddaughter who is currently attending the University.

After graduation, Claudine began her teaching career at Cunningham High School where she taught business for two years. She then taught at Anthony High School until she retired in 1963. While at Anthony, she was Y-Teen Sponsor and Junior or Senior Class Sponsor each year. Claudine was passionate about teaching and beloved by many of her students.

On June 21, 1959, Claudine was united in marriage with Virgil W. Gering in the Methodist Church in Mulvane. Virgil and Claudine lived in Anthony their entire married life and they both enjoyed basketball, music and being active in the church. This union was blessed with one daughter, Sherry Sue.

After Claudine retired, she substituted for 30 years and worked at the Anthony Public Library. She also was involved in many clubs and organizations. She was a 50-year member of the Business Professional Women's Club, a member of Clionian Club, YWCA, Delta Kappa Gamma (an honorary society for teachers) and Kansas Retired School Personnel.

As an active member of the Anthony United Methodist Church, she served on various committees, was Past-President of Anthony United Methodist Women and served on the District United Methodist Women.

In 2012, Claudine moved to Burke, VA, to live with her daughter. While in Burke, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities, visiting with friends, and being active in the Burke United Methodist Church.

On September 22, Claudine passed away at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil on April 7, 1990; and her parents.

Claudine's zest for life, strong faith, and love and concern for her community, friends and family touched many lives. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Sherry Greenwood and husband Robert of Burke, VA; her grandson, Will Greenwood of Phoenix, AZ; her granddaughter, Emma Greenwood, who is attending the University of Kansas, her students, and many other friends and family.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral Service is 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Anthony United Methodist Church with Pastor Brenda Kostner Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery. Family and friends will return to the church for a meal and fellowship.

Memorial contributions may be made to Anthony United Methodist Church or Anthony Public Library and can be sent in care of the funeral home.
