Obituary

Kathy E. Maltbie was born July 9, 1951 in Turlock, California, daughter of Otha Kenneth and Beulah Faye (Bocox) Maltbie.  She was a total tom boy, who loved hunting, fishing, camping, fighting the boys at school, and many other inherently masculine activities. She graduated Turlock High School with the Class of 1969.

Her dream was to become a flight attendant and travel the world, but her parents were not fond of her dream. She had a few odd jobs, including working at a car hop.  Later she chose a career as a CNA, working in several nursing homes.

Kathy was blessed with three sons: Terry, Michael, and Ken.  She worked hard to be a good single mom and always put in one hundred percent to make sure her boys were cared for.  She was big on teachable moments and her punishments reflected that.  Her grandchildren brought a twinkle to her eye and if she could have, she would have spent every minute of every day with them.

In 2000, Kathy's dad passed away and she chose to move to Kansas where her father spent his childhood.  She and Ken made the move to Anthony, with the help of Terry.  Shortly after settling she purchased the bar in Argonia, "The Duck Inn." After selling the bar, she worked at Videomax, Stars and Stripes, and Dollar General in Anthony.

In her early time at the bar, while getting to know the regulars, she and Alan Roe found companionship in one another. Through thick and thin, they spent over 20 years together.  The two eventually moved to Arkansas City.

On December 14, 2022, Kathy passed away at William Newton Hospital in Winfield, Kansas at the age of 71.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Michael.

Kathy will be deeply missed by her longtime companion, Alan Roe; sons: Ken Maltbie and Terry Sanders; sister, Sherry Pearson; 8 grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2022 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.

Memorials in memory of Kathy may be made to the Cowley County Humane Society and can be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003.
