Johnny Allan Barker was born September 24, 1958 in Attica, Kansas, son of Johnny Raymond and Wanda Sue (Roark) Barker.  He was a proud resident of Harper County his entire life.  He graduated from Southwestern College in May of 1982 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.  He eventually found his love for healthcare when he became an EMT.  He furthered his education at Wichita State University receiving his Master's Degree in nursing and went to work at indigent clinics in Wichita and Garden City as an APRN.  He completed his nursing career in Harper County devoting his time caring for his neighbors in rural healthcare.

In 2002, John made his home at the Barker family cabin at the Anthony Lake.  He cherished all the beauty of the lake and spent many hours bird watching, appreciating sunsets, and enjoying the lake resources.

After 5 years of a long-distance relationship, John married the love of his life, Earl Nelan, on May 23, 2014 in New York City.  They honeymooned at Niagara Falls, a place John treasured.

John Bones, as he was known to many, always enjoyed entertaining everyone.  His personality was genuine and he always had a smile on his face.  He was generous to a fault and truly tried to take care of everyone.  Many of his patients appreciated his authentic and loving care.  Upon his retirement in 2020, many of his patients were disappointed they would not be able to rely on his steady hand.

John was extremely proud to be part of the Barker family. He was always very supportive to his parents, siblings, cousins, niece, and nephew.

On August 8, 2023, John passed away unexpectedly at his home at the age of 64.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve; and sister, Leslie Casas.

John will be deeply missed by his husband, Earl Nelan; brother, Don Barker; sister-in-law, Suni Barker; niece, Sarah Marko and husband George and their son, Grant; nephew, Colby Barker and wife Yuki and their son, Steven; his furbaby, Piper; several cousins; other relatives; and many, many friends.

The family invites all to join them August 19, 2023 starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Anthony Gun Club to remember and celebrate John's life.  Since John loved feeding everyone some country favorites will be catered for all to enjoy! Bring a chair and beverage if you'd like.  The family also requests that you dress casual and for the weather.

Friends may sign John's register from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. August 18, 2023 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.
