John Harry Schlickau was born on April 15, 1948 to Harry G. and Lucille B. (Raymond) Schlickau in Harper, Kansas. His family lived on a farm northwest of Argonia and this is where John and his sister, Jane Ann grew up. John went to the Moffett Country School until he started attending school in Norwich in the third grade. He graduated from Norwich High School with the class of 1966. John went on to Kansas State University and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science in 1970.
On June 26, 1971, John was united in marriage with Jane Marie Wessels in Mulvane, Kansas. The couple made their home on the same farmstead where John was raised. This union was blessed with two children, Jessica and Gabe. After he lived 54 years on the farm, John and his bride moved into the town of Argonia in 2002.
A lifelong farmer and rancher, John was a member of the Kansas Hereford Association and Kansas Livestock Association. He raised and exhibited registered Herefords at local and national livestock shows. He was also an active member of the Harper County Fair Board and enjoyed being a leader for 4H. John attended the Zion Lutheran Church all his life. When the church was moved from the country into town in 1948, John became the first member to be baptized in the new building. In 2002, he became the Deacon of the Church.
John passed away at home on January 3, 2018 at the age of 69 years, 8 months, and 19 days. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Lucille; his brother-in-law, John Bert Clark; and his nephews, Thad and Matthew Clark. John is survived by his wife, Jane of the home; daughter, Jessica Jensen and her husband, Chris of Burrton, Kansas; son, Gabe Schlickau and his wife, Emily of Danville, Kansas; grandchildren: Brock and Addison Jensen, Harry and Lena Schlickau; sister, Jane Ann Clark of Independence, Missouri; other relatives, his church family, and many friends.
In Lieu of Flowers, Memorials can be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Harper County Fair Association and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Friends may view and register at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Family will be present for visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Funeral is at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Argonia with Reverend Rick Hathaway officiating. Interment will follow at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Argonia.
