Obituary

John Harold Mattingly Jr., son of John H. Mattingly Sr. and Gladys E. (Smith) Mattingly, was born in Anthony, Kansas, on March 8, 1933.

John grew to manhood on a farm west of Caldwell, Kansas. He attended rural grade school at Blackstone near the family farm and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1951.  In 1953, John was drafted into the armed services during the Korean War.  After his discharge from the service in 1955, John worked for the Farmers Coop in Caldwell.  In 1957, he moved to a farm northwest of Bluff City, Kansas and began his farming career.

On January 25, 1958, John and Delores Cink were united in marriage in Bluff City, Kansas.  To this union two daughters, Karen and Linda, and one son, Douglas, were born.  In 1992, John and Delores moved to Anthony, Kansas and they continued to farm.

On March 2, 2023, John passed away at Patterson Health Center in Anthony, Kansas, at the age of 89 years.  He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his wife, Delores of 55 years of marriage; and his brother, Max.

John will be missed by daughter, Karen Cather and husband, Mike of Anthony, Kansas; daughter, Linda Francis and husband, Jerry of Anthony, Kansas; son Doug Mattingly and wife, Tammy of rural Bluff City, Kansas; four grandsons: Ben Cather and wife, Amanda of Anthony, Jeff Cather and wife, Allie of Ames, Iowa, Erick Francis of Anthony, and Dodge Mattingly of rural Bluff City; two granddaughters: Michelle Sandon and husband, Brian of Nevada, Missouri, and Bridget Mattingly of Anthony; granddaughter-in-law, Shelley Adelhardt Francis of Harper, KS; three great-grandsons: Gentry Sandon of Nevada, MO, Drew Francis of Harper, KS, and Truett Cather of Anthony; three great-granddaughters: Lola and Hattie Jo Sandon of Nevada, MO and Charlie Cather of Anthony; sister-in-law, Bonita Mattingly of Winfield, KS; other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Anthony with Pastor Kent Olds officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Park Cemetery.

Friends may view and register from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Prairie Rose in Anthony.

Memorials in memory of John may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the United Methodist Church, and can be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003.
