Frances Joan Hess was born November 4, 1935 in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. At age 4 her family moved to Kansas. She graduated from Hazelton High School in 1953.
On May 15, 1953, Joan was united in marriage with Raymond Hess in Anthony, Kansas. After living on a farm south of Waldron, in Gage and Enid, they made one final move to Manchester, Oklahoma. This union was blessed with four children: Carthel, Randall, Lori, and Sheila.
Joan was a devoted wife, true to Raymond even after his passing. A loving and caring mom, her children adored her. She was independent, strong willed, determined, and had a great memory. Her favorite pastimes included reading, crafting, cooking, gardening, quilting, oil painting, crocheting, embroidering, sewing, and antiquing. An animal lover, she had many pets throughout the years. She was a faithful member of the Anthony church of Christ and also an active member of the Happy Homemakers in Manchester.
On September 23, 2020, Joan passed away at the Community Health Center in Wakita, Oklahoma at the age of 84. Her family is comforted in knowing she is once again by Raymond's side.
Joan will be deeply missed by her children, Carthel Hess and wife, Lynn, Randall Hess, Lori Patnode and husband, Dan, Sheila Rader and husband, Michael; sister, Barbara Conrady and husband, Tom; 9 grandchildren: Shelly, Hailey, Damond, Blake, Cameron, Serena, M'Cheila, Traeger, and Brenika; 3 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; two nieces; several cousins; and a host of friends.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2020 at the church of Christ in Anthony, Kansas with David Hodson officiating. Burial will follow in the Manchester Cemetery.
Visitation and Viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.
Memorials in memory of Joan may be made to the Manchester Cemetery and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
