Janet Marie Turner was born on March 20, 1951 in East St. Louis, Illinois to Robert A. and Goldie Cecilia (Weber) Hubert. She graduated from Harper High School with the class of 1969. On January 17, 1969, Jan married Dennis Dell Turner in Anthony, Kansas. They made their home in Harper.
When Jan moved to Kansas in 1968, she was a big city girl in a small-town world. Her family came from East St. Louis for work; during this time, she attended school and worked at Mark's Café, where she met lifelong friends and through them, her husband, Dennis.
After her marriage to Dennis, Jan worked at Mac's Café for a time and then helped on the Turner family farm. It turns out the tractoring life was not for her and she pivoted her attention towards the arts. Along with friends, she ran Rainbow Ceramics in Harper. Ceramics, crafting, and especially quilting were passions of Jan's and she was always quick to offer a special tip or idea to anyone who might need it.
Knowledge was important to Jan. She attended Pratt Community College where she obtained her associate degree and later continued her education. During her career she worked at Anthony Hospital in Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation for Juveniles and later at Harper Hospital in Admissions. Her time at both places was very special to her and she always spoke fondly of the friendships she made during her employment.
In 2014, Jan received the devastating news that she had breast cancer. She approached her diagnosis with the same bravery as any warrior. Jan's treatment was successful and she had remained cancer-free.
Jan loved Jesus and she loved her family. She and Dennis attended both the Westside and Eastside church of Christ and Jan also attended a women's Bible study group through the years. Jan and Dennis had extreme patience and love for their three children: Greg, Aaron, and Lacey. Jan and Dennis have been in Harper for many years and the family has grown, the extended family has grown, and the not-family has become family. Jan thought no matter what, family was family, and even the ones she didn't like, she loved.
Jan passed at her home in Harper on October 8, 2023 at the age of 72. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Goldie Hubert and her siblings: June Bertlesman, Judy Brown, and Robert Hubert, Jr. Jan is survived by her husband, Dennis of the home; children: Greg Turner of Cheney, Kansas, Aaron Turner (Diane) of Harper, and Lacey Huffman (Ray) of Buhler, Kansas; grandchildren: Cheyenne Sanchez, Katie Turner, Hunter Turner, Austin Woods, Parker Tessendorf, and Lola Huffman; great-grandchildren, Phoenix and Josie Sanchez; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
