Obituary

Hugh Albert Holmes was born June 27, 1927 in Enid, Oklahoma, only child born to Floyd A. and Edna Pearl (Bennett) Holmes. He grew up on the family farm near Wakita, Oklahoma, graduating from Enid High School with the Class of 1945.

On October 30, 1947, Hugh was united in marriage with Nadine Fern Lindell in Enid, Oklahoma. They honeymooned at the Holmes home place. This union was blessed with three sons: Mark, Terry and Gary.

Hugh's parents retired and he and Nadine took over the family farm. Hugh lived for farming, never wanting to retire. He and Nadine purchased a home in Texas and began spending winters there, always returning to Wakita around Easter in time for Harvest and staying until the wheat was planted. After Nadine passed away, Hugh sold their home in Texas, feeling that returning would not be the same without Nadine by his side.

Hugh was a dedicated Mason, being a member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Oklahoma A.F. & A.M. He was also active in the Harper County Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star and the Wakita United Methodist Church. He loved being surrounded by and spending time with his children, grandchildren, friends and his Masonic, Shrine and church families. He enjoyed a good game of anything - pool, shuffle board, dominoes, card or board games - spending countless hours playing with his grandchildren making many fond memories. His love for life will be remembered always.

On December 1, 2017, Hugh passed away at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Enid, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 4 days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine; and his parents.

Hugh will be deeply missed by his sons: Mark Holmes and wife, Gina, Gary Holmes and wife, Gale, and Terry Holmes and wife, Heidi; 6 grandchildren: Joshua Pierce and wife, Melanie, Hannah Holmes, Chad Holmes, Aaron Holmes, Hillary Holmes and Harrison Holmes; 1 great-grandson, Arthur Pierce; and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the Wakita United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bluff City, Kansas.
No visitation is scheduled.
