The son of Howard W. and Kathryn (Baker) Mayo, H D. Mayo was born July 26,1955 in Caldwell KS. He passed away in the Harry Hynes Hospice at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita KS on November 27, 2022 at the age of 67.

He was raised in Bluff City where he attended grade school before attending Anthony High and later graduating from Chaparral High School in 1973.

While at CHS he met the love of his life, Mickey; love at first sight (for him) at the age of 14 and 17. It took persistence on his part, but she came around the following year, falling for his sense of humor. They started their journey together early, despite concerns from their parents. They became partners and raised their three wild and crazy guys. They were together for 50 years and married 47 years.

HD began his farming career at the age of 12 when his mother would turn him loose on the tractor and watch from the road. He and his sister, alongside their mother, tended the many animals on the farm, often adopting the stray skunk, crow, or raccoon as a family pet. His love for animals was everlasting, often taking time to watch all wildlife and trying to speak to them (in their native tongue).

HD took pride in being a family farmer, and alongside his father and his three favorite gate openers/ tool holders/ grease monkeys, he built an operation based on love and togetherness. These times together gave HD plenty of opportunity to teach life lessons to the boys with a witty remark, on the job experiences, or one of his classic expletives. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium - a master.

HD loved music and could remember lyrics better than what he went into the other room for! From Cream to Steppenwolf, HD always had a song in his heart and a smile on his face. Those times when he wasn't singing, cussing, or hitting equipment until it was working, HD would likely be found talking, to anyone he came across at the store, on one of the many mail routes, in their yard, standing in their field, even driving on the same road.

HD enjoyed and was very proud of his six granddaughters and two grandsons. Going to as many dance recitals and ball games as possible, HD was building memories that will last forever. Grandkids Katlin, Dallas, Sara, Micah, Delaney, Adley, Bruin, and Doak. He will be deeply missed by them and his wife Mickey; sons, Justin (Tonya), Nick (Tracie) and Ryan (Christine); his sister, Wanda Wencl (Bryon); sister-in-law, Mae Winslow (Rob); brothers-in-law: Eddie Howell and Mike Howell; nephew, Delton Wencl; nieces: Melanie Wencl, Tara Wedel, and Alyssha Dudgeon; so many loving cousins who taught him the ways of the world; and many friends he kept in contact with through the years.

Graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2022 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bluff City, KS.  Viewing and registry will be held 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday at Prairie Rose in Anthony.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of HD may be made to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery or the Bluff City Community Building, and can be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003.
