Harold Ray McCartney was born to Rudy Francis and Ruth (Hatfield) McCartney on December 3, 1934 on the farm northeast of Harper, Kansas, where the family made their home.  A short time later, they moved west of Harper to another farm.  Harold attended school near Crystal Springs, Kansas until he quit during his 7th grade year due to his dad breaking a leg.  From that point on, Harold took care of the farm and did odd jobs for another farmer in the area for extra money.  The next year, Harold started driving a dozer full time.

On September 22, 1955, Harold was united in marriage to Frances Marion Langston.  Harold and Marion lived west of Crystal Springs.  Using his experience as a dozer operator, Harold went to work for county road and bridge.  The family slowly grew to four daughters and four sons.  They moved to a few different rural places before moving into Harper.  Harold eventually went to work for the city street department.  But he also had other jobs on the side to take care of his family.  One of those was helping at the Copper Club and Lounge, where he did anything from cleaning, helping with the bar, and even tinkering in the kitchen to try and come up with new items for the menu or improve on current recipes.

Like his dad, Harold enjoyed livestock.  He spent several years trading horses and tack and ran the Anthony Sale Barn for quite some time.  You could even find him and his buddies goat roping on a regular basis.  As busy as he stayed with working many hours, Harold still found time for play and for family.  His family was very important to him and he loved them endlessly.  Never meeting a stranger, Harold was a people person.

At the age of 87, Harold passed away on January 8, 2022 at the Attica Long Term Care Center.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Ruth McCartney; wife, Marion on January 6, 2006; daughter, Linda Riley; son, Kenneth McCartney; and grandsons, Dusty McCartney and Tony Jefferson.  Harold is survived by daughters: Patty Lalli of Wichita, Kansas, Pam Oller and husband, Rick of Harper, and Cindy Jefferson of Moore, Oklahoma; sons: Danny McCartney of Harper, Tommy McCartney and wife, Shawna of Newton, Kansas, and Jerry McCartney and wife Misty of Anthony, Kansas; twenty-seven grandchildren and fifty great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Graveside Service is 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the Harper Cemetery with Pastor Royce Vogt officiating.
