Gladys (Butz) Vardy was born March 14, 1925 in Versailles Missouri. Gladys was born to Fred and Ida Mae (Yoder) Butz.

Gladys grew up in rural Harper County, outside of Harper KS. She attended Harper High School. After high school, the family relocated to their new family farm located northeast of Argonia, KS. Gladys remained on the farm, helping her mother manage and keep the family farm going after Fred became ill and passed away as a young man in 1957. Gladys assumed the responsibility along with her mother in getting the farm work done. She also worked in Argonia on top of her farming responsibilities.

Gladys truly had a heart of service. She always enjoyed helping others. One special gift was her passion to help the elderly. She loved cooking and baking and sharing what she made. She loved sharing the delicious meals with others, especially elderly folks who struggled to have good meals prepared. Gladys could create a meal fit for a king in a moment's notice.

She also had a passion for children. Her warm Spirit and kind heart made it easy for children to bond with her. She taught Sunday school for many years, teaching young children at the Pleasant Valley Church. During her time at Country Living she shared a special bond with, Micah, which kept her going.  She also had a love of animals. She had a gentle touch with animals and they were easily won over to her side. She loved dogs, cats, horses, doves, and every farm animal you can think of, even a special bond with the family Angus bull. It was easy to see the trust the animals had with Gladys's gentle Spirit.

Gladys was united in marriage to Ed Vardy on April 2, 1983 at the Manchester Christian Church, where they were faithful members for many years. They continued farming together and Ed was also a rural mail carrier. One of Ed and Gladys's favorite hobbies was their bowling league. For many years, if you visited with either one, you would hear about their bowling. After retiring from the farming operation they lived in Anthony, KS. They were very active in the Anthony Christian Church, bowling, and very generous with the youth groups at the church.

On October 26, 2020, Gladys passed away at Anthony Community Care Center at the age of 95.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; brothers: Howard and Floyd Butz; step-son, Larry Vardy; and step-grandson, Austin Box.

Gladys will be deeply missed by her nephews and nieces: Randy Butz, Doug Butz and wife Melissa, Jennifer Butz Abel and husband, Jim, Pam, and Nancy; step-children:  Gail Box and husband, Craig, and Dennis Vardy and wife, Connie; 5 step-grandchildren:  Jimmy Vardy and wife, Carol, Janie Tubbs and husband, Terry, Cindy Sherradan and husband, Scott, Courtney Lincoln and husband, Ben, and Whitney Box and husband, Micah Byers; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2020 at the Anthony Christian Church with Pastor Jeff Enabnit officiating.  Burial will follow in the Manchester Cemetery, Manchester, Oklahoma.  Please practice social distancing and a wear a mask if you are able.

Friends may view and register from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.

Memorials in memory of Gladys may be made to the Manchester Cemetery and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
