Frank Arthur Hammans was born January 14, 1949 to Arthur and Mary (Hunter) Rutherford in Hill City, Kansas. Also welcoming him to the family were Clara "Masie", Johnny, Rosalie, and Patricia "Patty". Following Frank was Glynda, Rayma, Ray Lee, Darrell, and David.
In November of 1956, from Patty down to David were taken out of the home in Russell, Kansas and were adopted by other couples. After their adoption five more biological children were born. Frank and Glynda were adopted by Carmin and Ella Mae (Riggs) Hammans from Hoisington, Kansas. They lived in Hoisington until school was out and then moved to Harper, Kansas for two years. They then moved to Attica, Kansas where Carmin worked for Mull Drilling pumping wells.
Frank attended Attica schools from 4th through 1st semester of 8th grade. They then moved back to Harper where he finished his junior year in 1967.
Frank left home and did odd jobs for a while. He settled down in Colorado City, Texas. He worked as an auto mechanic and worked for Volkswagen dealership for a few years. He then went on his own fixing both gas and diesel vehicles for around 40 years.
He was married to Judy McCarthy, who had two boys Mickey and Dennis. Then he and Judy had two sons, Carmin on August 31, 1985 and Bobby on June 14, 1989. All the boys were adopted out.
Frank had a stroke in August 2018 and had to be put in a long-term care center in Colorado City. Glynda moved him into the Anthony Community Care Center December 14, 2023. He passed away in the care home on October 15, 2024 at the age of 75 years and 9 months. He was preceded in death by both parents; his wife Judy; 2 cousins, David Moore and Cheryl Smokorowski; two brothers, Darrell Sellens and Kevin Rutherford.
Frank is survived by his sisters: Glynda Hammans, Clara "Masie" Miler, Rosalie Patterson, Patricia Hubert, Rayma Bracken (Everett), Leah Maupin, Sheila Rutherford, and Lisa Bass; brothers, John Rutherford, Ray Hanes, David Thompson (Myra), and Roger Mohl; aunt, Velma Williams; niece, Gaye Little; nephew, Gavyn Hammans (Samantha); other nieces and nephews; and many cousins including Shirley Fink.
Graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2024 at the Attica Cemetery, Attica, Kansas, with Chaplain Tom Walters officiating. Friends may sign the register and view from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday at Prairie Rose in Anthony.
