David Max Hall was born January 25, 1949 in Wichita, Kansas, son of Max David and Willa Ruth Hall.  He grew up in Anthony, Kansas, graduating from Anthony High School with the Class of 1967.

After graduating from high school, David attended college at Washburn University and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.  David was intelligent and a good student and enjoyed learning throughout life.  He graduated with undergraduate degrees in Law Enforcement and Sociology.  After undergraduate school, David was admitted to Law School at Washburn University where he completed his Juris Doctor Degree.  During undergraduate school David took many Psychology courses.  In the mid 1990's, NWOSU called him to inform him they had changed the requirements for a Psychology degree, and he now qualified!  He paid the necessary fees and added another degree to his office wall!

In 1972, David married Mary Julana Cleveland.  They recently celebrated their 50 ^th wedding anniversary.  Mary Julana and David "attended law school" as a married couple.  Mary Julana was employed at Capitol Federal Savings & Loan, while David attended school.

In 1976, David graduated from law school, and they returned home to Anthony.  David joined the family law practice, Hall & Hall, with his father Max.  Early in his career, David served several years as County Attorney for Harper County.  David was admitted to the practice of law for 46 years.  He was an active member of the Kansas Bar Association and the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association, serving on the Board of Governors.

After 10 years of marriage, David and Mary Julana began to build their family.  This union was blessed with two sons.  Rearing their two boys became their main focus.  They agreed, looking back on the many family trips, sporting events, and youth activities shared as a family, were some of the best years of their marriage.

David enjoyed the outdoors, including hiking, camping, and hunting.  He spent many years as a leader of Boy Scout Troop 851, even before having his own children.  He was chosen by Quivira Council to serve as the Scout Master for one of the council's troops to attend the 1997 Boy Scout National Jamboree.  He attained many honors as both a Boy Scout and Boy Scout Leader.  David believed the fundamental teachings of the Boy Scouts were paramount to life and aspired to his best ability to live by the Boy Scout Oath and the Boy Scout Law.

David and Mary Julana's favorite place to vacation was Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park, Colorado.  They took their honeymoon there and returned regularly with their family.  They enjoyed hiking in the National Park and all that Estes Park had to offer.

For many years, the opening weekend of Pheasant and Quail season was a grand production held in the Hall home.  Mary Julana would make plenty of food, and David would organize the hunting excursions.  Many family friends would gather and stay in their home to join in the annual father and son hunt.

The Hall home has a fireplace and this was where you could always find David, on hearth in front of it.  Around the fireplace was where stories were told, politics discussed, family history shared, and jokes told.  David was the first to build a fire in the fall and was the last to acknowledge summer was here and fireplace season was over.  On one occasion, he even built a fire on a cold, rainy day in July!  You could always tell when David was home by the smoke coming from his chimney.

Cooking and grilling were some of David's talents.  He enjoyed anything that could be prepared on the grill or smoker.  He would often bring home new recipes to try and watched the Food Channel fervently.  He had an affinity for his German Heritage and would often put a German flare into his cooking.

Later in life, David's favorite activities included time spent with grandchildren.  Playing checkers was among the favorites.  Papa, as he was called, did not take it easy on them.  They had to learn to play the game well!  He did such a good job of teaching them, some of them began to be able to beat him!

David was a member of the First Congregational Church of Anthony.  He was a Mason and a Shriner.   He served many years as one of the local contacts for the Salvation Army.

Preceding David in death are parents, Max David and Willa Ruth Hall; his brother, James Arthur Hall; and a grandson, William Robert Hall.

David will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Julana of the home; son, Mitchell (Tavish) Hall of Harper; son, Joseph (Sierra) Hall of Anthony; 6 grandchildren:  Willa, Marshall, Anna, Claire, Elsie Jo, and Parker Hall; and a host of other family and friends.

Memorial service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Anthony. Inurnment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery.

Friends may register 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
