Vagabond entertainer, snake oil salesman, magician, artist of stage and screen, David Dillinger Jefferis passed away October 3, 2017.
David Brian Jefferis was born on March 19, 1960 in Long Beach, California to Harold H. and Lila Mae "Toddy" Reneau Jefferis. The family lived in Long Beach, Texarkana, Texas and Compton, California before settling in Anthony, Kansas.
David graduated from Chaparral High School in 1978. He continued his studies at the Oklahoma School of Broadcasting, University of New Mexico and the Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School.
David was born to entertain. He adopted the name Dillinger at a young age and became well known as a radio personality at KPNC and WBBZ in Ponca City. He appeared in dozens of movies; including Twister, The Dead Can't Dance, Bender and Wichita. Live theater was his great passion, performing in such diverse productions as Bus Stop, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Musical, Black Elk Speaks and Wait Until Dark.
He honed his skills as a clown, magician, escape artist, sword swallower and fire eater. Several years were spent at Cowtown in different roles. Most recently he was the owner of Dr. Dillinger's Freaks and Floozies, a vaudeville/burlesque review and was instrumental in bringing burlesque to Wichita.
Described as a wonderful spirit and a gentle soul, David had a huge heart. He loved deeply and was a true friend of the arts.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Karen Jackson in 2008 and his wife, Teddie Barlow in 2016.
He is survived by his sisters Rhonda Berry and her husband Vernon, and Suni Archuleta and husband Tony; step-children Jason Lile and wife Sloane, Amy McDill and Scotty Barlow-Hill and husband Dereck; grandchildren Gabrielle, Caroline, Fiona and Keaton Lile, Joshua and Matthew McDill and Grant and Ellinore Hill; nieces and nephews Peggy Swafford-Lundin and husband Richard, Juan, Joseph and Jessica Archuleta, Joshua Swafford, Tyler Archuleta and Emiri Campbell, his theatre family and countless friends.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life is planned for a later date.
