Clarence Warren Thatcher was born on September 5, 1921 in Wilsonville, Nebraska to George and Minnie (Tracy) Thatcher. He graduated from high school in Goodman, Missouri with the class of 1940.

Joining the Army on June 8th, 1942, Clarence served his country during WWII and received the Purple Heart in July of 1944. He told his daughter just days before his passing that he still had shrapnel in his shoulder. Clarence took part in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He also received the Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge. With the rank of Technical Sergeant, Clarence was honorably discharged on October 6, 1945. He had spent 2 years and 28 days of continental service and 1 year, 3 months, and 1 day of foreign service.

While they were both living in Attica, Kansas, Clarence married Velma Lee Romig on August 28, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas. They lived several places as he settled into a career in the Oil Field in 1951, working as a Rig Technician. When Clarence retired, he and Velma moved to Lindsey, Oklahoma. Then in 1996, they moved to Anthony, Kansas. Only days before his passing, they moved into the Anthony Community Care Center.

On January 27, 2017, Clarence passed away at the age 95 years, 4 months, and 22 days with his wife nearby. He had only recently met his daughter that was born while he was away in the Army. A few hours before his passing, he had spent some more time with her and one of her daughters. Clarence was an only child and is preceded in death by his parents.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 68 years, Velma; his daughter, Jerri Hoffine; his granddaughters, Jonna Hoffine and Jacque Montelongo; his new family at ACCC; other relatives and friends.

Memorial Service will be held at the Harper Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017 with Pastor Jerred Haydock officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard,United States Army.

Memorials may be given to the Harper United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
