Clara M Newton

Clara Mae Newton, age 98, of Anthony, KS passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 9, 2026. Clara was born on October 20, 1927, in Major County, Oklahoma, to Andrew and Grace (Gasswint) Bouse. The oldest of five children, she attended Bethel Grade School and graduated from Cheyenne Valley High School in 1945. She married James Kenneth Newton on June 27, 1946, and the couple moved to eastern Kansas to farm. Their first daughter, Beverly, was born in Parsons, Kansas, in 1948. A few years later, they moved to Anthony, where their second daughter, Marilyn, was born in 1953.

Clara loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. She was a devoted wife and mother and a proud grandmother who never missed a chance to cheer on her grandchildren in their activities. Her steadfast love for her family will always be treasured. She leaves a legacy of kindness and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.

Clara was a devoted supporter of Anthony United Methodist Church, local schools, and the community. Her faith in Christ was reflected in her willingness to serve and her generous spirit. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and Bible School, led Girl Scouts, and was always ready to help others. As a member of Eta Alpha Sorority, she formed many meaningful friendships and fond memories. She enjoyed ceramics classes with friends, loved spending time outdoors, and took great pride in her flower gardens. Each summer, she and Jim planted a large vegetable garden and shared its harvest with family and friends. She also loved gathering her family together and often prepared everyone’s favorite fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Clara touched the lives of many children by babysitting in her home while caring for her two young daughters. Later, she worked by taking in ironing, selling Avon, serving in the USD 361 kitchen, and working at Olmstead’s Drug Store and Hadsall and Andrews Insurance. She also baked many beautiful cakes for weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions.

Clara is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Beverly Davis (Roy) of Harper and Marilyn Dean (Kent) of Topeka; five grandchildren, Julie Dragoo (Joel), Brad Davis (Kiley Davis), Mark Davis (Sara), Andy Dean (Katie), and Kayla Henry (Brandon); ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Imogene Reames and Violet Olmstead; sister in law, Judy Bouse and special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; and two brothers, Albert Bouse and Ed Bouse.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Heritage Estates, Attica Care Home and Patterson Health Center for their love and care. Our hearts will always be grateful.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2026 at the Untied Methodist Church in Anthony with Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony. Friends may view and sign the register from 9:00 a.m. to the service Monday at the church.
