Obituary

Cheryl Kandice Kernohan was born June 11, 1952 in Ulysses, Kansas, daughter of AJ and Wilma (Thompson) Howard. She graduated from Johnson City High School. She attended cosmetology school in Alva, Oklahoma.

On April 6, 1975, Cheryl was united in marriage with Larry Pat Kernohan at St. John Catholic Church in Kiowa, Kansas.

Cheryl owned and operated Mystic Beauty Salon in Kiowa. After moving to Attica, she owned Country Charm Beauty Salon and worked for Roger's Pharmacy, until her first son was born. She then went to work for Wheat Belt Girl Scout's in Hutchinson, where she had been volunteering for several years. She volunteered for more than 25 years with the Girl Scouts. After retiring from the Wheat Belt, Cheryl worked at the Citizens National Bank in Attica for 10 years.

She and her family became members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Anthony, Kansas, of the St. Joan of Arc Parish Community. Her Christian stewardship there included being director of religious education for the young people of the parish and serving on the Confirmation Preparation team with fellow parishioners, Anna Ruth Blanchat and Phyllis Misak for many years, helping to prepare the youth for the Sacrament of Confirmation. She also found time to serve as president of the Sacred Heart Altar Guild and sacristan for the Sacred Heart Church, in addition to proclaiming the Scriptures at Mass as a Lector.

While serving as Altar Guild president, Cheryl helped found the Prayer Shawl Ministry for the parish, an idea she received from friends of other faith traditions in the Attica community. This ministry brought many blessings and much comfort to the members of the parish and others who received these colorful shawls, especially those who were ill.

The Lenten season each year was always a special time for Cheryl, as she and her husband, Pat, organized wholesome and inspirational movies shown on Sunday afternoons during the season, especially at the parish hall in Anthony. She and other parishioners helped put together the traditional Seder Meal for the parish each Holy Week. In the meantime, Cheryl organized church cleaning assignments to help prepare it for the Easter celebrations.

Cheryl's Catholic faith was very important to her. She helped Father Peltzer organize the "Mary Mantle Prayer Group" for the Anthony community, which is a special devotion directed toward the inactive members of the Catholic faith. She also helped fellow parishioner, Karen Oller, from Harper, organize special days of recollections and retreats for the women in the parish. Cheryl was honored by the Catholic Diocese of Wichita in 2002 for her dedication to the religious education programs at both St. Boniface parish in Sharon, Kansas and St. Joan of Arc Parish Community in Harper County.

Cheryl kept active and busy in many ways in her church and community even in the final months and weeks of her illness. Cheryl will be deeply missed in her family and community. May she rest in peace!

On August 15, 2017, Cheryl passed away at Attica Long Term Care at the age of 65 years, 2 months and 4 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ronnie; and sister, Quinn.
