Philip Stanley Payne was born October 12, 1945 in Harper, Kansas, son of Phillip and Leona (Hawkins) Payne. His family lived in Sun City, but his mother was brought to Attica to stay with her parents during the end of her pregnancy. The family later moved to Attica where he graduated from Attica High School. He attended college in Wichita for two years.
Stan, as he was known to most, chose a career serving his country. After graduating he enlisted in the Armed Forces. Early in his military career he served tours in Vietnam and South Korea.
His career moved him and his family numerous times. They lived in Germany, Italy, California, Florida, Georgia, Arizona and Missouri. He served for a total of 32 years between his time in the Army, Air Force and National Guard before retiring in 1997 with a the rank of Master Sergeant.
In 2015, Stan moved back home to Attica, Kansas. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Jeff Long Post #11449 in Harper. He attended the United Methodist Church in Attica.
On March 13, 2020, Stan passed away at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Hurst; and brother, Bobby Payne.
Stan will be deeply missed by his children: Tonya Wruk, Scott Payne, Troy Payne and Rhett Payne; seven grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE with Military Honors will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2020 at the Attica Cemetery in Attica, Kansas with Pastor Ken Keeling officiating. The casket will be open following the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cup of Grace Food Bank or to Wounded Warriors, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Prairie Rose Funeral Homes, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003, is in charge of arrangements.
